I Think I’m Ready For Another Journey…

In what will no doubt be my last pop culture post for at least a few days because I am starting to aggravate even myself, I wanted to call your attention to something that blew me away this week. One of my favorite ’80s bands is Journey. “Faithfully” is my and Jim’s “song” (corny geeks, I know, but we like it) and my all-time favorite, but I love their other stuff, too.

Now, I don’t go around walking the dog with “Any Way You Want It” blasting through my iPod headphones, nor do I fold laundry while listening to “Open Arms”, but I get the warm fuzzies whenever I do hear one of their songs nonetheless.

When I heard way back when that Steve Perry was no longer singing with Journey I thought, “Oh well. No Journey concerts in my future.” Then, more recently, I was intrigued to find out that their new lead singer, Arnel Pineda, was discovered on Youtube. (Wasn’t Andy Samberg of “Saturday Night Live” also discovered on Youtube? A-ha, after researching for a minute, I found out that is true. Read it here.) To read about how Pineda’s (Okay, and Journey’s) good fortune happened according to Neal Schon, click here.

And if you’re a Journey fan* (past or present tense), I dare you to watch this and say that you would not go to see them in concert this year.

*If you’re not a fan, go easy on me… LOL

I’m a HUGE Journey fan, but he just isn’t doing it for me. I’m glad you like him. It’s amazing how all the 80’s groups are experiencing rebirths.

    Janice: Rock on!

Stacey & Melissa: I know, I get it. Not offended. I like him though. (BTW, the chance of me actually being able to afford the concert with all the other shows I want to see this year is very slim anyway!) And I agree: it’s kind of crazy with all these 80s bands coming back!

This guy’s not bad, but noone will ever replace Steve Perry. Neal Schon has always been vastly underrated on guitar also. It must be tough to have Eric Clapton and Santana fighting over you when you’re 15. Hope you’re approved for the 2nd mortgage so you can afford the concert tickets.

Hi NOT Nukedad: Nice analysis. And we already had to get a 2nd mortgage to do major foundation repairs a couple of years ago, so unless I can get a 3rd, I won’t be able to go! Wah.

Not bad – but I totally agree, I like the “original” because it’s the FEEL of the band with the original members. does that make sense?

    I totally didn’t know that about Adam Samberg, btw – he’s HILARIOUS….

    From Dawn:

Scott and I saw Journey (they opened for Def Lepard, but it should have been the other way around, imo) a couple of years ago when their ‘then’ lead singer was sick. They had a young singer take his place and he rocked the place down. We enjoyed him much better than Steve Perry! I wish I could remember his name, though. They wouldn’t let anyone take pics of him with the band because he wasn’t a ‘regular’ member. Shame.

I saw Journey on the Charles Osgood show this weekend and they were talking about the new kid. He is absolutely amazing and sounds weirdly like Steve Perry! I would go see them. I practically have a memory for every Journey song. Ahhhh, the 80’s.

  • Andie

my husband LOVES journey. His favorite song is “don’t stop believin”

we are actually going to see a cover band that does a great rendition of it this weekend!

  • Melisa

Deanna: Of course it makes sense, silly!

Hey Dawndi! I would agree. Def Lepard (Leppard??) should have totally opened for Journey! Aww, but Journey didn’t completely accept their own lead singer? Sad!

Sue: I know: Totally weird! (Maybe it IS Steve? Nah…)

Andie: Ha! Coincidence! Have a great time!

Hey Mo! Yeah, I think the reason they didn’t take pics of him with the band is because he was a sub. It’s still a shame. He was young, HOT, and just jumped ALL OVER that stage. LOVED HIM!

I am a huge Journey fan and miss Steve Perry dearly!

Saw them in concert in ’83 – those were the days!!
