Creative Parenting 101: Holding Onto Your Babies, One Illegible Page At A Time

Every now and then here at the Scrawl I like to throw in a “Creative Parenting 101” post. It’s been a while, and I thought that Fatherhood Friday would be a good day to bring it back this week. Whether you are a parent or not, you absolutely know that each little bit of childhood is a fleeting thing. Once those crazy kids grow a bit and move beyond the current stage they’re in, it’s all over (most of the time! I’m not talking about when they move out and then move back…). That’s why I have mentally frozen moments in time for my own selfish purposes; for example, I…

I’m Just Helping You Locate A Season Premiere, That’s All

Here’s a quick programming note: One of my tv obsessions, “The Locator”, has a new season starting this Saturday, March 21 at 9:00 Eastern/8:00 Central on WEtv! Yay! You may recall the little post that I did about the show back in October when I first, er, located it. Troy Dunn, the Locator himself, even left me a comment! That was thrilling. (and, when you think about it, not surprising at all that a P.I. would have a Google Alert set for his own name or tv show title) If you missed it, click here to read it. So, I for one know where my butt will be on Saturday…

    Paradise By the Dashboard Light…

…but not tonight. See this picture? That’s a Shamrock Shake from McDonalds. Was that photo taken this evening? NO. It was taken a couple of weeks ago, when we treated ourselves to the newly available (for this year) Shamrock Shakes. I love those things. No, you don’t understand. I LOVE THEM. Not like some women love their fences, mind you, but I definitely have a weakness for Shamrock Shakes. I like them so much that, where most normal people will nurse a shake for oh, I don’t know, thirty or more minutes?–I risk serious stomach issues because of my borderline lactose intolerance, sucking that shake down in record time. Like,…

    Happy Homemaker Tip #2

First, before I officially start this post, I have to tell you that if you came by for a visit yesterday and found that the link at the end of yesterday’s post didn’t take you to the place you were thinking, it has been fixed now and you will be taken to the right place. Or the wrong place. Depends on how you think about it. Long story short, it’s been fixed. Click away. I dare you. Today’s Happy Homemaker Tip is not something I personally came up with, but it has saved us lots of time and arguments around this house. The boys, though once were in sizes far…

  • Do I Really Want My Readers To Know This?,  Fun in Chicago,  My Sister Has Mad Skillz,  Too Funny To Ignore

There Are Many Ways To Define Love; As It Turns Out, Way More Than I Knew About.

Just a quick post for you Saturday blog readers; I’m attempting to get my kitchen totally spotless today (Imagine that!), INCLUDING getting the kitchen desk cleared of the clutter. I’ll let you know if I’m successful; keep your fingers crossed for me. (I also realize that I haven’t commented back to you all on the last four or so posts: Busy week! I’m getting to it, hopefully this weekend if you want to keep checking back!) We’re also having Julesie join us for dinner and a Fab Five Game Night. Good times! Anyway, you may remember this post about my total sadness and anger about the Sears Tower being known…

  • Fun in Chicago

Whatchu Talkin’ Bout, Willis? No, REALLY. Whatchu Talkin’ Bout???

I am NOT happy. Not happy at all. Yesterday, I was innocently checking on Twitter when I got terrible news. The Sears Tower, one of Chicago’s most famous icons/attractions/sources of pride, will be renamed this summer. Are you KIDDING me? Chicagoans, say it with me: “NOT AGAIN!!!!” Call me dramatic (it wouldn’t be the first time), but as a native here I feel violated. Again. There are certain things in life that you just count on, you know? Death, taxes, and the Sears Tower still being called the Sears Tower. Willis Tower? Fuggeddaboutit. I don’t give a rat’s patootie that the naming rights were up for grabs over the past…

    It’s The Little Things

If you asked me what I love about my husband, I could name off a bunch of major things in a heartbeat and then go on for a couple of days about the “minor” stuff, but of course there are lots of little things that I wouldn’t remember off the top of my head…unless I got an unexpected reminder. I’ve got one for ya. Thanks for asking. Here is how I test a pen, to see if it writes: Here is how he does it: I love that. Makes me smile every time! What are some of the little things *you* love about your significant other?

  • Family Fun,  Jew Stuff

    L’dor Vador

Happy Purim to all of my Jewish peeps out there! I posted the background behind the holiday last year, so to save time, I’m linking it right here. Last night we went to the Megillah reading at the temple, and it was a total blast. Last year’s reading was fun (click here to read how that went), but this year was a little more fun. It’s always a great time to get together with the other families in our community, but Purim is extra-fun because it is supposed to be wild and crazy. Last night was extra-noisy. There were whoopie cushions, musical instruments, and other various noisemakers (we call them…

Flash Flood Watch! Er, I Mean, Watch! Flash Flood!

You might recall that back in December, we had some amazing rain come through here, and in order to save our family room from being flooded, Jim made a siphon out of a garden hose and I dug a trench from our back yard halfway to our front yard, in order to drain out the major lake that had formed back there. I’m not going to bother sending you to that post, because it was hella-long and about all sorts of different things that happened over Hanukkah week. Never fear. You’re gonna get to see Round 2 of the Wells Family’s Throwdown with Mother Nature. It’s still sort of Winter…

She Earned Each and Every Rhinestone, The Hard Way!

Recently I have become acquainted with Karen of My Microscopic Life. She is a grad student in the great state of Iowa, and hangs out on the internets with good people like Weaselmomma, Nonna, and Oh Captain. In checking my sitemeter as I obsessively do ten to fifteen times each day do every now and then, I started to see that someone from the Ames, Iowa area seemed to be reading my archives. All of them, as in EVERY. SINGLE. MONTH. That’s like, four hundred and something posts. But that’s not all, folks. She left comments. Not hundreds of comments, but a comment here and there all along the way.…
