When It’s About the Destination & Not The Journey

Note: This post is part of Fatherhood Friday at Dad Blogs, where all the cool kids are hanging out. (Moms are welcome over there!) Welcome to my visitors from DB; thanks for stopping in! Someone I know (Not ME, mind you. Seriously.) had a complaint about her husband a long time ago. She said that it drove her nuts that he folded the laundry “wrong” (I guess that’d be “wrongly”, wouldn’t it?) and she eventually stopped “letting him” fold the laundry. Are you kidding me? First of all, sometimes people (men AND women) who have overbearing partners/spouses learn that, by doing things differently, i.e. “not how he/she wants”, they’re taking…

  • Friends,  I'm Apparently Old.

Ohhhh…I Thought I Was Posting in the SUBurban Dictionary.

Not to beat a dead horse, but wasn’t it exciting yesterday when Tom, Momo, and Weaselmomma and I totally blunked Nukedad AND I got the word “blunked” into the Urban Dictionary? Totally a banner day. Except for one of the 5,000 phone conversations I had with Weaselmomma, when she started laughing uncontrollably. (That’s actually not unusual for her: she laughs A LOT. Surprised? I didn’t think so.) I said, “What’s so funny?” She said, “Well, you know…the Urban Dictionary is full of street language and such, and here’s a middle-aged Jewish woman getting a word in there.” I said, “I AM NOT middle-aged!!!!!” (Jewish? yes.) And then I thought for…

What Ever Happened To That (Dancing) Guy?

I was cleaning out a closet over the weekend and found an envelope full of old photos of my high school friends. The pictures gave me a good laugh. Many of them featured one of my favorite people: that guy in the group who loved to make everyone laugh with his crazy antics. (Unfortunately, his antics sometimes went a little too far over the line…) I don’t want him to google himself and find that I’m telling all of his old secrets, and frankly I’d be nervous if he were to contact me because I don’t know what ever really became of him; for that reason, I’ll refer to him…

    Here’s a “Story” About A Man and a Full House…

I’ve been using Google Reader for a week now (I’m not scared anymore!), and I can’t tell you how much relief I feel; I’m not missing a thing on all two billion of my most favorite blogs, and I feel like I’m saving time like crazy. I updated my blogroll. At least I think I did. I’ve got blog bookmarks all over the place on this computer! Anyway, I wanted to give some props to three of my new fave blogs; I hope you’ll check them out if you haven’t already. (Go on, you know you want to.) The “Blog” of “Unnecessary” Quotation Marks: Oh my “goodness”!! Mrs4444 turned me…

A Great Day + SLEEP = The Perfect Gift

I hope all of you mothers out there (and I mean that in the nicest way) had a great day yesterday. I had a wonderfully low-key day, which is exactly how I like it. Each and every year, Jim apologizes for “sucking at Mother’s Day”, but in fact each and every year he gets it exactly right. Some moms really enjoy being fussed over all day long on Mother’s Day: I don’t. I just want to be “allowed” to do what I want to do. I don’t like a scripted Mother’s Day. I don’t need for everyone to hang around nearby to take care of my every whim. We’re running…

Still The Boss of the Skating Rink After All These Years

Note: This post is part of Fatherhood Friday at Dad Blogs, where all the cool kids are hanging out. (Moms are welcome over there!) Welcome to my visitors from DB; thanks for stopping in! My (and Julesie’s) Dad used to regale us with stories of his teenaged years. I always pictured him to be a little like Danny Zuko in character; you know, mischievous with a heart of gold. One of my favorite stories really isn’t a story; rather, it’s a slice of a story whose image plays in my mind often when I think of my Dad. As a teenager, he used to be the guy who rollerskated around…

When A College’s Best Face Takes The Day Off

As you know, we have started the college search for the older boy. As we begin this journey, we’re trying to get a feel for what he wants in a school: size, location, programming, community, etc. Here’s what we’ve done so far: 1. Visited a small, private college (student population: 2,400) 2. Visited a large, public university (student population: 26,000) 3. Attended a College Fair, where we collected information for more than twenty-five schools that offer both majors the boy is interested in pursuing 4. Sent off for additional information from a few schools 5. Visited the local community college Number five? We did that just last week. The community…
