When 500 + 500 = 5000

Yesterday, we attended a Lacrosse Club picnic and scrimmage. On the way there, we had to stop at the grocery store for some cookies and at the gas station to fill up the tank. We were short on time, so we decided to go to one of those combo grocery store/gas station complexes for practically one-stop shopping.

Jim dropped me off at the door of the grocery store (something he ALWAYS does on the days when he doesn’t come in with me because he’s so sweet, but it was especially appreciated this time because I’ve been having some back issues for a couple of days), and he and the boys headed over to the far end of the property, where the gas station was.

I paid for the cookies and, when I stepped back outside they weren’t back yet, so I decided to walk. It felt good to move a little bit, as my back had me practically stiff as a board for two days (it’s almost totally better now, thanks for wondering about that!).

I arrived just as they were pulling away from the pump. Jim pulled to the side so I could get in and, as I fastened my seat belt he said, “Hey, I was on my way back over to get you; you didn’t have to walk all the way over here.”

I replied, “Yes, but it felt good to walk; besides, I saved YOU from having to drive all the way over there!”

A deep voice rose up from the back seat; it was the Older one, making up his own words to one of my favorite songs of all time, “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” by the Proclaimers:

“I-Would-Drive-Five-Hun-Dred-Miles

And-I-Would-Drive-Five-Hun-Dred-More

Just to be the man who drove

Five-Thousand-Miles

To fall down at your door…”

We all laughed at his fuzzy math skills (school starts in less than two weeks) and gave him a hard time about it, but he had a nice save.

“Well, he loves you SO MUCH that he would do that 1000-mile drive for you five times.”

Awwww…always nice when the kids know how much love there is between the parents, don’t you think?

    What a great kid!

I swear by this book: "Healing Back Pain" by Dr. John E. Sarnos. You can pick it up used on Amazon for less than a dollar. I used to have on and off back pain until I read this book (and that's all I did: read the book) and I've been pain free for several years now.

I will not reveal any details because when I do, people always start explaining how it won't work for them.

Good save. The little (big) suck up just needed to cover so that you wouldn't hassle him about school work during the summer months.

Teacher Tom: Hmm, I may have to check into that book. However, to be honest, I think my back problems would probably go right away if I…lost about 40 pounds! 🙂

WM: I know, totally. We were giving him a hard time about it…

What a great post! Sorry your back has been hurting you, but glad it's better.

    Have a great weekend.

I, too, like that song! I am going to be singing the new version all night, now.
Glad that your back is feeling better. I think you need a vacation on Cape Cod to make it perfect!
    Jim, are you listening!!!????

His math may be off, but his brain is definitely working! Such a sweet boy.

But ummm no baking? Grocery store cookies? Was this one of those "you can only bring store bought items" places?

Glad your back is feeling better!

That really is a sweet story! It's so odd because we were totally singing that song the other night! Great minds! 😉

Yes, it is great when kids know how much their parents love each other and can screw up math just to tell them they know.
I'm sure he'll get back in a math frame of mind when he gets back to school. I'd give him a pass until then.
