Here’s The Secret To Having A Super Passover Seder

Lean in so I don’t have to shout… Closer… Closer… Ready? Here’s the secret: That’s right. The secret to a super Passover seder is to serve MY charoset*. Seriously. Want the recipe? It’s in this post. Not Jewish? No problem: I feel confident that you could impress your family if you just put this out on the table one fine spring evening, just for kicks. If you are Jewish, I hope you have a Happy Passover! *I must add, out of respect to my good friend who is hosting the seder tonight (as she does every year) that the other secret to having a super Passover seder is good company,…

It Was A Great (Evan Lysacek) Day For A Rally

Yesterday I attended the rally in honor of Evan Lysacek, Vancouver 2010 Olympic figure skating gold medalist. The rally was held in downtown Naperville, Illinois as a part of “Evan Lysacek Day”. (As you have probably already guessed, Evan grew up in Naperville and that’s why he was given his very own Day.) I had a great time, and thought you might want to come along on a trip down memory lane. The rally was set to begin at 4:00 p.m., but you know how I am when it comes to waiting for celebrities: I like to be nice and early. Besides that, I know that whenever something special is…

I Love Munich in the Summertime.

I don’t *technically* want to skip right over spring, but I’m certainly more excited for summer than a person should be at this point in the year. As of this morning when I officially reserved our seats on the plane, our family has HUGE plans. Photo credit: Wikimedia CommonsGet our beds ready, Kat! We’re on our way! ©2010 Suburban Scrawl

    Rolling Out the Red Carpet

When I was growing up, I remember hearing stories about how our mom’s entire group of friends was constantly at her house, listening to 45’s and hanging out. Her house was the go-to house; she said it was always crawling with teenagers there. Although I’m sure my mom was a vivacious teenager and had great qualities that drew people to her, my grandparents must have made visitors to their home feel very, very welcome: teenagers typically don’t linger where they aren’t comfortable. Mom really wanted the same sort of upbringing for Julesie and me, too, and she was always open for visitors. Our dad? Well, he felt the same. And,…

The Day On Which I Pretended To Have Never, Ever Driven A Minivan At Any Point In My Life.

The older boy came home from school yesterday and announced, “I can get you an oil change at school tomorrow if you just go to the store and get a filter and a container of oil.” Score! My car has been overdue for an oil change for a few weeks now, and how lucky am I that I am the mother of a son who is taking Auto Mechanics class this semester? I replied, “Really? That’s awesome! I’ll go out to the store in a bit!” He looked at me and, in all seriousness, warned me, “Just make sure you get the correct oil and filter. They have to match…

And Then There Will Be Three

As of late, our family unit is looking a little bit smaller, about twenty-five percent smaller, to be exact. With the older boy being a high school senior who works and has a girlfriend, more and more dinner conversations, outings, and movie-watching evenings include only Jim, the younger boy, and me. It’s weird. We’re in the final six month stretch: the older boy will be away at college starting this fall. While I look forward to this next major transition because it means that he is one step closer to being the independent adult we have been raising him to be, of course there is a bittersweet taste to it…

Do What I Say, Not What I Do.

We have this little “joke” in our house. Whenever there is a car parked in the driveway*–which is often these days, what with the older boy having his own car and all–anyone who leaves the house to get in a car and drive away gets the warning, “Don’t hit so-and-so’s car! haha!” It doesn’t matter if Jim or I parked outside of the garage for some odd reason, or if Julesie is visiting, or if it’s just the aforementioned older boy’s car, parked in its normal space at the lower left end of the driveway, the warning is the same: Don’t hit it! HAHA! You can imagine my surprise when,…

    Stand Up.

Growing up, I was raised to be the nice girl, a rule follower, a goody-goody (SO not ashamed of that), a lady. This photo could not have been taken with my trusty, dented, pink-duct-taped Olympus Camedia C-60 because it’s circa 1984. Just FYI. Also, check out how gorgeous (and thick) my hair was. Wish I still had hair like that. Oh, and ignore that little animal clipped onto my collar. Those were all the rage back then. What a stupid trend. My parents had very high expectations of me, and I’m really grateful for that because I turned out to be a really awesome adult. Unfortunately though, due to the…
