• Too Funny To Ignore

Boy Scout Training, or MacGyver? (You decide.)

The younger boy recently landed in the nurse’s office at school because he was playing football and injured his thumb when he caught the ball at a weird angle. The nurse called to tell me that they were icing it and she didn’t think he had broken it, but that we should (of course) keep an eye on it. Her unofficial diagnosis was that it was, at worst, sprained. I was working that day and spoke with him on the phone for only a minute, asking him to call me when he returned home so he could fill me in on how his thumb felt. Later, I received a text…

    The Graduate

I can’t believe it’s Wednesday already; I’m still catching up from our whirlwind weekend, which went very, very well. Sunday’s graduation was amazing, and–surprisingly–I didn’t even do the full-on, ugly cry! (Yay me!) The morning began with photos in the backyard: lots of them. It was pretty surreal to see my own kid in a cap and gown, I have to say. He was extremely patient, too, with all of the picture-taking going on. Jim’s parents, along with his sister and her family, were there and in the mix (my parents would come over later), and the photo session took about thirty minutes. One of my favorite moments was when…

    Taking A Break!

NO, it’s not what you think. You can’t get rid of me that easily. The last two weeks have been the busiest two weeks I can remember in my recent life history, from what I can remember, anyway. The stress has impaired my memory, as clearly evidenced by the fact that I have forgotten my purse at the salon (where I work part time) NO LESS than three times during this time period, and each time I only realized it upon my arrival at home, fifteen to twenty minutes later. Yeah, the paranoid commutes back were really fun. Not. Also, I’m a list-maker, and I have made NO LESS than…

    Hey, Beautiful!

Most of my freelance work consists of writing feature articles for two salon and spa industry magazines. In researching these articles, I have e-mailed and spoken with countless salon and spa professionals. Everyone with whom I’ve interacted over the past few years has been really nice, but I may have just found my favorite. Yesterday, I was stressed (what else is new?) because one of my editors contacted me to tell me that one of the sources I used in my most recent article wasn’t going to work, and asked if I would contact someone else for my story. She was nice enough to include a list of possible (and…

    Driving Miss Melisa

The big news around here isn’t all about high school graduation, believe it or not. The younger boy is having his own sort of commencement this week. Thanks to a permit test passed with flying colors, he is beginning a lifetime of…driving. Acquiring a driver’s license is very different from how it used to be, back in the day. Basically you read the driving rule book, you *might* have taken a driver’s ed class in school if you were able to fit it into your schedule, you took a permit test, and one day, you just went to the department of motor vehicles on your sixteenth birthday and, as long…

    Last Day.

My first-born son left the house a few moments ago. He had a spring in his step, a sparkle in his eyes, and a smile on his face: not typical characteristics possessed by him on a school day, but today is special. Today is his last day of high school, ever. EVER. As this weekend’s insanity of relatives and graduation festivities approaches, I find myself reflecting on my own high school graduation (so many, many years ago…). I remember how pretty I felt in my blue cap and gown. I spent the day hugging friends, giddily talking about how excited we were to be finished and able to move onward…

    Who, Me???

Yesterday evening I took a moment to say hello on Twitter after a twelve-hour day watching the younger boy’s lacrosse team play six games in a tournament (they took third place: woot!), and was shocked and confused to get this tweet from my friend Carol: I had absolutely no idea what she was talking about because this was the first I had heard of it, so I asked her for clarification, and she sent me the link so I could see for myself. I refreshed the page a couple of times and rubbed my eyes to make sure I was seeing something that was really there, and indeed I was.…
