In The Major Understatement Of The Year, I’ll Call This Troubling.

Yesterday afternoon, the younger boy came home from school and as I was performing my daily inquiry into how his day went, he was moving away from me slowly, getting himself towards the stairs that lead up to our bedrooms. He faced me the entire time, and after a moment I realized he was doing his best to politely get away. I thought he had to use the bathroom, since he just got home. He said, “Hang on, I’ll be right back!” I heard him trying to locate something in his room before running back downstairs, a printed piece of paper shaped like a big bookmark held tightly in his…

    Hot Off The Presses! Wigilia!

When my boys, now eighteen and nearly sixteen (ouch, it always hurts to type that), were little, we always had talks around this time of year about how people celebrate different holidays from each other, and sometimes the same holidays as each other but in different ways. They loved checking books out of the library at school that they could bring home and read, learning about all kinds of celebrations. They grew up having a very firm grasp of Judaism but with a great attitude about embracing all of their friends and the way they experienced different aspects of life (including religion), too. In my weekend post promoting books written…

    Ten Paces

I was walking the dog one day last week when I saw them again. I’ve seen this elderly couple several times before, walking in the neighborhood together, but not really together. The woman is always in front, shuffling her feet along the sidewalk at a snail’s pace. About ten paces behind her is where her husband is, moving his feet at the same speed. I haven’t ever seen them talking. I’ve never seen the woman wait for her husband, or her husband try to catch up to her. They are a pair, though, because I never see one walking without the other. The sight of them and the never-changing distance…

  • My Kid Has Mad Skillz,  Too Funny To Ignore

It Seems Like Only Yesterday He Was Playing With Cardboard Boxes.

You know how it goes: you watch your young child open up a fantastic gift on his birthday (or whenever), and he ends up spending more time and energy on the box it came in rather than the gift itself. It’s been ages since that sort of event has happened in this house, but yesterday I was a witness* to something that was totally reminiscent of those days of long ago. We received a large box from the FedEx delivery man. The older boy, home from college for the week, brought it in the house and I looked at the return address: it was from Harry and David, sent by…

A Letter To The Guy Who Watched My Zumba Class This Morning

Dear Guy, It really ticked me off this morning when I arrived for my Zumba class to see you, walking up to the studio with your wife/girlfriend/sister/whatever and then pulling up a chair right next to the studio door. It was highly unusual, to say the least, that you didn’t just drop her off and then leave. I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you are a really nice guy who just cares about the interests of your wife/girlfriend/sister/whatever and decided to accompany her since you had nothing else to do for that hour. I’m not suggesting that you had sleazy motives at all,…

  • Do I Really Want My Readers To Know This?

The One In Which I Put All The Cards On The Table.

You know how all of us out here in the blogosphere have, ahem, secrets? The kind that we keep offline and to ourselves? I was having a conversation with my girl Momo last night, during which she said, “we think we know these people, but…do we??” (I paraphrased that, but you get the idea, right?) Well, I’ve got a secret, and I think it’s the perfect time to share it with you. First, a deep breath: Inhaaaaaale. Exhaaaaale. Okay, here goes: ©2010 Suburban Scrawl

Let Me Help You Celebrate the Holidays With Hallmark!

Oh my gosh, do I love Hallmark. I always have: not only did my mom manage Hallmark stores for years (I helped out over some of the holidays, too), but also the quality of their products is unmatched. In general, there’s something about greeting cards that is magical to me. I’m always amazed to find cards that say exactly the right sentiment for whatever occasion I’m celebrating. And of course, when I want to say it in my own words, in my own hand, I can always choose a card that’s blank inside. Here’s one my favorite Brian Regan clips of all time. Watch. Trust me, it’s hilarious. Anyway, back…

    Get In The Game…And Win!

Over the past few years, there has been lots of talk about making cuts in programs which, in my opinion, are very, very important for growing kids: sports and music. Due to institutional budget cuts as well as the state of the economy itself, which causes families to have to make some of the same budget cuts in order to keep food on the table, organizations are looking for more help than ever to ensure survival. Our lacrosse club is an expensive venture for anyone who wants to be a part of it, and I’m not just talking about the equipment. (Have you SEEN the prices on lacrosse equipment? Sheesh!)…
