    Happy New Zzzzz…..

If you were to ask me if I could sum up 2012 in a word, I would probably say “no” at first, and then come up with lots of single descriptors that I would state loudly with appropriate pauses in between until you say, “That’s not just one word” and then I would say, “I know, but I just can’t describe this year in one word.” *Whew* But then if you made me pick one, I’d probably say “exhausting”. I’m not sure if you’ve noticed this about me, but I live my life at full throttle about 95% of the time, which is a blessing and a curse. In 2012…

    Twenty-six

To my love on our twenty-sixth wedding anniversary: Every year when we go on our anniversary dinner date, you ask me the same question. “So…where do you think we’ll be in ten years?” Though I love the idea of verbalizing our ideas of what life will be like a decade from today while enjoying a meal together at a romantic restaurant, I never feel like I have a good enough answer: you always seem to have a more specific picture in mind than I do. I’m an excellent planner on a day-to-day basis but life has so many twists and turns that it’s hard for me to imagine what it…

How Can You Argue With Logic Like That?

D’s affinity for taking showers that use every last drop of hot water in the house has been well-documented (Okay, in one post, but it was a very thorough documentation). When he went away to college, our water bill went down by about $750 per month* and the whole family got used to having enough hot water for our own showers again. Whenever he comes home, there’s always a “re-acquaintance period” during which we all forget that we need to do anything we can to take our showers before he wakes up each day. Yesterday was Christmas, which in our house means that we just laze around in the family…

You Know What My Family’s Doing Today…

Merry Christmas to those of you who are celebrating! I hope you have a fantastic, stress-free, fun day with your loved ones. I hope those of you who don’t celebrate Christmas ALSO have a fabulous day. We’re going to hit the theater (providing the five of us can agree on a movie)…right after we do all of this:

I Laugh Because She Thinks *I* Did *HER* A Favor.

Last night I was online (surprise, surprise) and happened to check my Tweetdeck to see what all of my Twitter friends were up to. I noticed this, from my friend Jen: I decided to respond with a sincere offer: As usual, Jen’s response to my response was devoid of any emotion whatsoever: Actually, I was getting ready to go out to dinner with Jim and the boys, but I told Jen I was very serious about the offer to help and I would be happy to stop by her house for a while after my TDM class this morning. We had a series of Direct Messages which included her asking…

    Jingle All The Way

Though I was born Jewish, I have celebrated Christmas in addition to Hanukkah at different times in my life. I should mention that by the words “celebrating Christmas”, I mean “celebrating the secular parts of the holiday”. When we were kids, my sister and I got stockings every year*. We would’ve had a Christmas tree too, had our mom been able to talk our dad into it, but he wouldn’t even go for a Hanukkah bush** and so we had to settle for Aunt Jemima. Our uncle married our aunt (duh), who was not Jewish (still isn’t), so we used to make the trek to their house for the Christmas…

    Coca-Cola Balanced Living Workshop–A-ha Moments!

I was compensated for my participation in Coca-Cola’s Balanced Living Workshop, but my thoughts and views are my own. So, I’m back. It probably won’t surprise you to learn that when I was telling people that I was going to a Balanced Living Workshop about health and wellness that was hosted by Coca-Cola, I got a lot of the following: “Huh?” “Coca-Cola? RIGHT.” “hahahahahaha!” The fact is, not only does Coca-Cola have so many brands–including lots of no- and low-calorie drinks–that I would rather link to them than list them here, but they also have some great initiatives that make it easier for people to enjoy healthier servings of their…

Time Flies When You’re Having Fun

This is my final post for Hallmark’s 2012 “Life Is A Special Occasion” campaign. I hope you have enjoyed reading about my family’s everyday special occasions as much as I have cherished being a part of the campaign. Many thanks to Hallmark and and the folks at Fleishman-Hillard, especially my friends Jon, Liz, and Deidre! I’m pretty sure I say it every year, but 2012 really flew by. I can’t figure out if time seems to be passing so quickly because my kids are getting so old, or if it’s because we’re busy all the time, or if it’s because we really squeeze as much as we can out of…

    Adulthood Looms

It’s thick in the air around here. I can feel it looming. As busy as I have been lately, I have noticed. What’s fleeting around here? Childhood. I have been doing my best to pay extra attention to my boys, to close the laptop when they are talking to me, to listen fully, to answer them thoughtfully. When they want to play a game with me, I drop everything I’m doing if at all possible and I play. When J wants to show me his latest DJ video, I watch. Same with D and those random YouTube videos that college students seem to spend hours sharing and laughing about. (He…
