One Word? Are You Kidding Me?

I’ve been tagged by the lovely, “also-doesn’t-like-her-foods-touching-each-other” Michelle at Honest and Truly to do another crazy meme, so here goes! I’m going to try my best to not cheat, as Michelle totally did (by using more than one word answers!); but I can’t guarantee anything because I constantly feel the need to explain myself…keep your fingers crossed! The rules?Answer the following questions in one word and then pass it on to seven others. Where is your cell phone? Charger. Where is your significant other? Outside. Your hair color? Brown Your mother? Creative Your father? Funny Your favorite thing? Family Your dream last night? None Your dream/goal? Satisfaction The room you’re…

We’ll Continue Regularly Scheduled, Non-cranky Posts Tomorrow.

Several days ago, I received an e-mail from someone. I cannot identify this person because it goes against my personal blogging rules, but I have to rant about the e-mail a little bit. Actually, just the beginning of it. The e-mail started with, “I hate to do this to you, but…” Here’s a clue: If you “hate to do this” to me, DON’T DO IT. First of all, when I read or hear that phrase, my stomach locks up, my blood starts to boil, and my brain starts to madly wander, considering all of the horrible things that you’re getting ready to say to me. Second of all, in all…

The Blogging Olympics Are Coming To Chicago!

Sure, sure, Chicago is anxiously waiting to find out if we will host the 2016 Olympic Games. I really hope that we get it. We were able to handle one night of complexities that was attended by a couple hundred thousand and watched the world over; why not the Olympics? We’ve got almost a year before we will find out if Chicago beat out the competition (Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo, and Madrid), but there is another distraction of Olympic proportions taking place in my city that I can definitely count on: BlogHer 2009! What the heck is it? Here’s the 4-1-1, directly from the BlogHer site: Building on the momentum…

Creative Parenting 101: Taking Time Outs To The Next Level

I watch alot of the television show “Supernanny”. Actually, my entire family does. It’s good entertainment for us since: A. Our boys are waaay beyond the years/age of the children who are featured, and 2. We get a perverse sort of pleasure out of seeing how some of the parents on the show just don’t have a clue that they actually created the mess (I wrote *some*. I would even go as far to say *most*.) Jim and I were never really the “Time Out”/”Naughty Step” kind of parents. In fact, although we put them in “Time Out” on more than a few occasions (especially the younger one), there are…

Ms. Maggie Moo and a Bowl of Stew

I have a couple of food-related things to share with you today; the first one is way exciting. Or it could be. No, strike that. It IS way exciting. My girl Mags over at Ms Maggie Moo Talks 2 U is having a contest and I need you to help me win by entering to win yourself! (Still with me?) The prize? Some of her amazing home-baked goodies, shipped directly to your door! (or hopefully, MY door.) It’s easier for Mags to explain, so I’m copying her details here: “The rules are simple:1. Leave a comment (on MAGS’ blog post) telling me (her) you would like to be submitted. 2.…

Alright, Alright…Birthdays Aren’t THAT Bad, Especially When They Last A Week.

I have done a lot of bellyaching over the past couple of months about turning F…F…Fo…Forty, and although I am still not thrilled, my chosen new attitude is helping me to settle in, along with the wonderful birthday WEEK I just experienced. My friends and family tossed so much love at me, how could I be anything but warm and fuzzy? Last Sunday evening, Jim surprised me by taking the entire Fab Five (if you’re a newbie here at the Scrawl, the Fab Five is me, Jim, the boys, and my sister Julesie) out to dinner. Everyone knew where we were going except for me, the birthday girl. I was…

Have Your People E-mail My People; We’ll Do Lunch!

“Turning on a dime” is not something I’m normally known for. I like my routine, and although I can indeed change course if something comes up, I don’t usually enjoy making a change; I usually avoid it if at all possible. Unless it’s an emergency or something that just sounds like an opportunity I can’t pass up. Like today. I had planned to spend the day catching up with housework and other boring (but comforting and satisfying!) activities around here since I didn’t lift a finger yesterday. I taught class this morning (and for those of you who read my tweets last night, I totally did not even have a…

Next, Maybe A Voice-over Role In the Next Pixar Feature?

So I went ahead and listed my lovely (if I do say so myself) phone voice in my birthday post (#34), and fame came a’callin. Alright, fame’s name is actually Kim Martucci, otherwise known as “Weather Kim”, otherwise known as the meteorologist for WUSA-9 in Washington DC, otherwise known as a frequent Suburban Scrawl visitor. By the way, don’t confuse Kim with Angie Goff, Traffic Anchor for the same morning news on the same station, you know, the one who put her hand on Julesie‘s cheek in my crazy Gwen Stefani dream and got super close to the other cheeks of Richard Simmons in her broadcast studio: Kim needed somebody…

Get The Kleenex, Sally…”Someday” Is Here!

When I saw the movie “When Harry Met Sally” back in 1989 with Dawn (when she spilled about 1/2 pound of M&Ms all over the already-dirty theater floor), I had a good laugh at the scene where Meg Ryan, as Sally, was sobbing on Billy Crystal’s (as Harry) shoulder when she found out that her ex-fiance’ was newly engaged to someone else. On top of all the woes that come with that situation, she exclaimed, “And I’m gonna be forty!” Harry looks at her, confused: “When?” “Someday!” She cried. Yeah. Ha ha. Very funny. Back then, I was–let’s do the math, Nukedad–twenty-one. I couldn’t even imagine what it could be…

    Proud To Be A Chicago-American!

I feel compelled to write a few words about this historical evening. I have feelings of “Did this really happen?” and “Pinch me…really, did it happen?” I am so excited about the possibilities for our country that I am jumping out of my skin. The fact that my favorite city plays a huge part not only as the “adopted city” of Barack Obama but also the stage on which he gave the speech last night when it was all over obviously warms my heart and makes me feel even more proud. I have to say that whatever people feel about his “readiness” to be the President of the United States,…
