    Under Pressure

And now, a vent. My apologies. It had to come out of me at some point. I haven’t spent much time online this week. I’m out of touch with Twitter, I’m unaware of my friends’ status updates on Facebook, and my Google Reader’s waistline is expanding by what seems like fifty unread posts every few hours. In real life? I’m not keeping up very well either. I have a tremendous amount of activity going on over the next two weeks, and earlier today a migraine sidelined me until, well, about two hours ago when I made myself get up from my self-imposed two-hour bed rest, in order to push through…

    Apples and Oranges

I would guess that contrary to what they do or say, all new parents know deep down that comparing their child to another is not a good idea. All of the parenting books say so, anyway. We all know that all children are different, yet playgroups are full of insecure parents who are worried that little one-year-old Johnny isn’t walking as well as one-year-old MacKenzie, or that Susie can string three words together while Becky has yet to say anything, and Becky is six months older. And it doesn’t stop when the kids have outgrown the playgroups and move on to school. One mom might tell a friend about how…

Have You Hugged Your Mother Today?

Just popping in to wish all of you moms out there a Happy, Happy Mother’s Day, especially my own Mom: Love you, Mom! I’ll talk to you later today! Mom & Me. (This was, for several obvious reasons, NOT taken with my trusty, dented, pink-duct-taped Olympus.) ©2010 Suburban Scrawl

  • Jim Has Mad Skillz

Desperately in Need of a Christmas Miracle

It’s a sad state of affairs around here in regards to the older boy’s car. He and Jim (mostly Jim, due to the older boy’s being smothered during the final couple weeks of senior year with work, testing, lacrosse, papers, prom prep, and other such busy-ness) have been working on the car for nearly two weeks, trying to figure out exactly why it won’t start. Jim has taken apart everything in the starting assembly. He’s tested the starter, ignition switch, and relays, and he was, over the past couple of days, checking each and every wire for a short somewhere. I have frequently remarked that it would be SO tremendous…

  • Random Thoughts,  UGH.

    Perseverance

Definition courtesy of Dictionary.comI have, regarding approximately 98% of the elements in my life*, a super-human sense of stick-to-it-iveness. It’s a lethal combination of passion, attention to detail, pride, perfectionism, strong work ethic, and stubbornness. When I decide to do something, I put on my game face, focus on the goal, and get to work. I’m often the last one standing after others have long given up. Usually, I don’t allow setbacks to get me down. (That’s my sense of denial stepping in, I think!) On Monday afternoon, I had a little bump in the road with a current project, and although I did my best to play it off…

They Think I’m Nuts…But It’s All Part of the Plan.

My family members really, really like salt, probably more than they should. “Please pass the salt” is something heard over our dinner table countless times, as is the tune “Here Comes the Bride”. Huh? Yes, you read that correctly. Whenever I pass the salt, I pass the pepper with it, and I hum the first few bars of “Here Comes the Bride”. I grabbed this family portrait and description from the Nick, Jr. website Although the Nick, Jr. show “Blue’s Clues” (one of our family favorites, back in the day!) has taught kids that Mr. Salt and Mrs. Pepper are INDEED married*, I am convinced that surely that television relationship…

Crossing That Bridge Because We Came To It

The older boy and I met my sister Julesie at the riverwalk today, so she could take his senior pictures. It wasn’t the first attempt; it was the third. Last time, we were in Tennessee for Thanksgiving and although she took a couple of rolls, he was really crabby that day and she said it showed through in the pictures. The first time we tried, it was way too windy and cold. I posted one picture from that session; if you don’t remember it, you must click here, especially if you need a laugh. We had high hopes for today, and it went very well. I’ll post a couple when…
