Comfort

I just left my desk for a few minutes to grab lunch in the kitchen. As I went downstairs I caught a glimpse of the rain and all of the gray outside, and I decided to make myself a grilled cheese sandwich. I was able to cook it exactly the right amount so the bread was just the right shade of brown and the cheese was ooey gooey. I quartered it just like my mom used to when I was a kid, and just like I’ve cut nearly every sandwich I’ve made for myself in my adult life.

The process of making that sandwich only took a couple of minutes and enjoying it took about the same amount of time. I am warmed from the inside; I created my own comfort.

Lots of people I know are having a hard time right now. I can’t make them all grilled cheese sandwiches but I wish I could. What I can do is check on them. And you can check on your people, too. It only takes a minute to give somebody a virtual hug, a little bit of comfort. You won’t be able to fix their problems but they will appreciate the reach-out.

And don’t forget, while you’re comforting your loved ones, do something nice for yourself, too. I recommend grilled cheese.
