    The Journey

It makes total sense (to me) that the day after writing a post about how consumed I am with Chicago’s LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER show, I would write another post about Chicago’s LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER show. I have two very good reasons. The first reason is because I was a total idiot yesterday and forgot to mention that tickets are still on sale. Had we used the same venue as last year we would have sold out weeks ago, but we decided that we’d “Go big or go home” this year and moved to a venue three times the size (the gorgeous Athenaeum Theatre!), therefore…tickets are still available! You…

Flat Sue’s Back, And This Time We’re Headed West!

If you’ve been reading for a while, you may remember how my friend Sue–who I’ll call Real Sue for the purpose of this post–sent me a Flat version of herself–Flat Sue–so she could “experience” the BlogHer conference in New York last summer, sort of, since she wasn’t able to attend in person. I, with the help of several friends, Instagrammed the heck out of Flat Sue’s New York adventures. If you set aside the fact that we lost track of Flat Sue (ahem, LIZ.) for part of one evening and had to put out a “Missing ‘person’ Report” on Twitter, well, the weekend was hysterical. Wait. Let me back up.…

    Zumba-versary

The first time I ever took a Zumba class, it was at a fitness conference called Midwest Mania. I loved it so much that I came home and immediately looked up a local instructor on their website so I could try a class close to home. I took the class, and was officially hooked. I have always loved to dance. I still do: I have a dance floor radar and if I sense one is nearby, I make a beeline for it. I am *that* woman who is out there for any group dance at a wedding or Bar Mitzvah reception. I am a quintuple threat (1. Cha Cha Slide,…

    Totally Worth Your Time

Having blogged for more than five years–which, face it, is like twenty-five years in internet time–often I come up with a great idea for a post and then realize that I may have written about it already. If it’s something worth repeating, I put a new twist on it and present it to you again*, sort of like re-gifting, but better. And with that… I received a card today from a friend we haven’t seen in a while, and when I opened it I was pleasantly surprised to see that every inch of the inside was covered in handwriting. It was a note describing how much she and her family…

I Laugh Because She Thinks *I* Did *HER* A Favor.

Last night I was online (surprise, surprise) and happened to check my Tweetdeck to see what all of my Twitter friends were up to. I noticed this, from my friend Jen: I decided to respond with a sincere offer: As usual, Jen’s response to my response was devoid of any emotion whatsoever: Actually, I was getting ready to go out to dinner with Jim and the boys, but I told Jen I was very serious about the offer to help and I would be happy to stop by her house for a while after my TDM class this morning. We had a series of Direct Messages which included her asking…

My Friends + Laughter = Me + Thankful

I had a couple of ideas for this, the penultimate NaBloPoMo post for 2012. I thought I might write about how I used to sew clothing (easy patterns, but still) for the boys when they were little and how a matching pair of shorts led to one of my favorite pictures of them from way back when. Then I thought that I would post a couple of black and white pictures I took of the boys over Thanksgiving weekend. (I love black and white pictures, don’t you?) I also considered sharing (finally) one of the buildings I toured during Open House Chicago, since I never got past talking about Marina…

    High School Talent Pool

I wanted to call attention to the blogs of two of my friends from high school. For some reason–I can’t figure out why–I think it’s hilarious that all three of us are blogging. I know: it’s not funny at all. Maybe hilarious is the wrong word. Cool? Interesting? I don’t know. All I do know is that we were good friends who were in the same AP English class senior year and now we’re blogging. I wonder how many others from that class have blogs. Okay, not really. I have never wondered that, ever. Anyway, Cyndi writes a blog called Intrepid Mother. Cyndi has nine children (Yes, N-I-N-E) and is…

How To Have A Beach View If You Don’t Live At The Beach

Back when I was a senior in high school, I was on the yearbook staff. I can’t remember how many of us there were (I’m guessing twelve to fifteen) but we bonded quickly and worked together really well. Most of us worked in the yearbook workroom: we were the writers, designers, and section editors of the book. The ones who didn’t work in the yearbook workroom on a daily basis? Those were the photographers. They were out and about, taking the pictures for the yearbook and developing them in their darkroom. Yes, DARKROOM. As you may have guessed, this was well before digital was the norm: in fact our entire…

My Meeting With Tim Gunn (And Other Stories)

I am a big “Project Runway” fan. Total understatement. It’s one of my favorite shows: I’m totally obsessed. I’ve watched the show, now in its tenth season, since the very beginning. Right after Season Three I took a trip to New York City with my sister and got to lay eyes upon the winning designs from the season, on display in the window at Macy’s. A couple of years ago, I had the pleasure of interviewing Laura Bennett (season three finalist) upon the release of her book, “Didn’t I Feed You Yesterday?” I love so many things about the show. I love Heidi Klum, I love the judges’ critiques (especially…

The Real Martha’s Got Nothing On The Next Martha.

If you follow my friend Jen on Twitter (@TheNextMartha), you already know that she is crafty and creative and crazy (in a good way). She is full of ideas and her mad skills in, well, EVERYTHING related to home projects just blow my mind. She happens to adore Martha Stewart, hence her Twitter handle and the name of her blog, The Martha Project. Did I mention yet that MARTHA STEWART FOLLOWS 57 PEOPLE ON PINTEREST AND JEN IS ONE OF THEM? So there’s that. You can imagine that when Jen found out that the Friday lunch keynote speaker at last week’s BlogHer conference would be none other than the Real…
