The boys left for a week of Boy Scout summer camp yesterday. Were they excited? Yes…and no. The sixteen-year-old was literally bouncing with happiness at the thought of leaving for camp—for many reasons but mainly because the Troop was headed back to his favorite camp, which he hasn’t seen in three years. As I sat at the computer on Saturday evening, he was sitting on my exercise ball, bouncing away as he told me of his plans to set up his hammock and sleep there rather than in his tent. When he was younger, many of the older boys did this and they were quite the envy of the rest…

We’re Taking Over.
We watched “Wipeout” tonight and there was a contestant who wore her tiara on top of her helmet in the Qualifier. Just sayin’.

I’m TOTALLY Not Being a Jerk Right Now.
Really. I’m not. It’s just that I’m exhausted and have some family time obligations tonight…and I want to do proper justice to my concert post. So I will have to keep you all hanging until tomorrow afternoon. My deepest apologies! Tune in tomorrow! xoxo

Creative Parenting 101: Turning Rules Into a Road Map
“I want to learn someday how to drive a car.”From the Thankful Journal, 1999 and almost seven years old Well folks, that day is here. Actually, he has been learning to drive a car for almost a year now, thanks to the State of Illinois’ requirements for new drivers: he needed 50 hours on his permit before obtaining an actual license. The thirteen-year-old will need 100 hours, due to the requirements recently increasing again. I’m fine with it. There have been many teen-aged deaths due to car accidents over the past many years and Illinois is doing something about it (probably–hopefully–along with many other states. Each hour behind the wheel…

Blog Nosh Magazine Launches…and I’m On Board!
I am very excited to announce that one of my favorite posts–and yours as well, I think–will be featured on Blog Nosh Magazine, a new online–well,–magazine that takes the best blog posts from the archives (You know, the ones you thought nobody would ever read again?) and puts them back out there for new exposure. My post will be up on the Entertainment “channel” tomorrow. I’m not even going to tell you which one it is, which will effectively force all of you to check out this new site! (insert evil cackle here) Many, many thanks to Soapbox Mom, who is an Entertainment Channel editor with Blog Nosh. She and…

Creative Parenting 101: Discipline Can Teach a Lesson AND Be Entertaining!
When the older boy was approaching seven years old, I started to notice that he was taking certain things for granted. It was really ticking me off, so I discovered (either in a magazine or on tv, can’t remember exactly) what I thought at the time was a really great idea…and now I can say it was Pure Genius. I made him start a “Thankful Journal”. Each day, I had him write about two or three things that he was thankful for in a blank book that I had purchased especially for this purpose. It made him think, it gave him much-needed writing practice, and gave us great conversation starters.…

I’ve Been Tagged! (Part 2,369)
The lovely Sue of As Cape Cod Turns tagged me for this sometime last week and I tried to pretend like I forgot am just getting to it today. At first glance and considering my name, I was thinking this one would be tough, but let’s see, shall we? First, the instructions: Use the 1st letter of your name to answer each of the following. They have to be real places, names, things. Nothing made up! Try to use different answers if the person in front of you had the same 1st initial. You CAN’T use your name for the boy/girl. What is your name: Melisa4 letter word: Meme (HA!…

Does This Mean I’m A Big Girl Now?
Huckdoll* did a super-dee-duper meme (in fact, I do believe she made it up) a couple of weeks ago. She posted about her childhood thoughts about what she wanted to be when she grew up, and what she actually has been, job-wise. Read it here. I decided that might be an interesting trip down memory lane for me, so here goes. What I have been… Babysitter: Started at age 11 for, I believe, $1.00 an hour. (That was competitive in 1979) I even took an official Babysitting Class and got a card to show to any prospective nervous parents. From age 11 to age 16, I went from newbie to…
