We invited Julesie over today for a late birthday celebration, which meant one thing: Rainbow Cake! I make rainbow cake for all of our special family occasions; it’s a family tradition that our mom started when we were little ones. One of the most memorable cakes our mom ever made was for Julesie’s third (we think) birthday: it was Cookie Monster. The reason we (and some of our relatives) still talk about that cake today is because all of that dark blue icing made the entire insides of our mouths, our tongues, and our lips blue for the rest of the day. It was quite comical. I have made Julesie…

More Like A Drive-By Than a Drive-Thru
My first real job outside of babysitting was working for McDonald’s. I adored that job. I’ve written about it before, briefly, and instead of having you read that entire post (because I listed all the jobs I’ve ever had, with a paragraph on each!) I’ll just excerpt it here: “I, along with a bunch of my friends, “opened” the brand-new McD’s right outside the grounds of our high school. I was the one in the drive thru, yelling at everyone to hurry up because we had to get these cars through in 30 seconds. We had a great time working together. We did things like cook up a whole basket…

Queer Eyes For the Straight Girls
On Friday, my roomie Sue (or, as she is commonly referred to among some of her new friends, “Cape Cod”) reallyreallyreally wanted to go to the Expo Hall to meet Carson Kressley. Though I was more excited about the idea of meeting Tim Gunn, I’m also a Carson fan and told her I’d be glad to go with her. We showed up at the booth at 3:00; he was supposed to appear at 4:00. (Oh, I’m sorry…I guess people were in SESSIONS instead of waiting in line for celebrities. My bad.) Even the women at the Nikon booth (Nikon sponsored his appearance) told us we should go away for a…

It Only Took Twenty-Eight Years…
On Friday, I did myself proud. As many of you know, I write feature articles for a nail salon industry magazine. Every July, my fabulous editor asks her writers to propose ideas for the following year. Last year as a part of my 2009 article proposal, I came up with the idea of interviewing the host of one of my favorite business makeover shows in conjunction with an article about salon makeovers. (Click here to hear his glorious British accent and see what his personality, full of infectious excitement, is like. He’s awesome!) I let my editor know that I would do my best to locate his PR people and…

When NYC = New York Candy
I made it quite clear in a post I wrote before I left town that a candy pilgrimage was in order for this trip to NYC, but I had no idea what a huge part candy would actually play over the three and a half days. (There are worse things!) We spent lots of time getting up close and personal to candy in NYC. Times Square is home to the Hershey Store and M&M World. See? There’s Hershey in the background, on the next block over from M&M World. We visited the Hershey store only long enough to buy a candy snack pack for our double-decker bus tour (more on…

Call Me Fickle…
Waaaay back in the year 2000 (I was still in my early thirties then. Ahhh, those were the days…), Julesie and I went to see a movie with a friend of mine. If I’m not mistaken (Julesie will, no doubt, correct this and any other details I may get wrong in this story…remember, I’m old now.), the movie was “Where the Heart Is”, featuring Natalie Portman and Ashley Judd. While at the theater, employees were handing out flyers advertising a free movie screening for the next evening. Advance reservations were required and even a reservation didn’t guarantee entry: it was first come, first served at the start time. The movie?…

We Race Without Ever Leaving The Family Room.
It was a banner weekend for the Fab Five as we planned for the Season Premiere of one of our all-time favorite shows, The Amazing Race. I was overjoyed to discover on Saturday that the Reality Channel was showing a weekend marathon of the Amazing Race All-star season, because we thoroughly enjoyed that one and seeing it again was a great warm-up for the new shows. As I started watching the marathon, I send Julesie a text: “Wanna come for dinner tomorrow night for the season premiere of the race?” She said yes, and asked if I had a theme in mind. Um, no. Not this time. We had planned…

Sisterly Celebrity Sightings: Bill, Hill, and Will
I decided to start a new category within the virtual walls of my own Blogosphere that will encapsulate the celebrity sightings, meetings, and stalkings-from-afar that my sister and I have been lucky (or sneaky: you decide) enough to share*. Today I’m going to write about Bill and Hillary Clinton, but not in relation to the Democratic National Convention that is currently taking over the fine city of Denver. Lots of bloggers are doing that. Instead, I’m going to write about the Clinton Experience (Sounds like a ride at an amusement park, doesn’t it? Waiting for the snarky “Clinton ride” comments…) that Julie and I had in 2006. We were in…
