Yesterday we took J up to the college that D attends, as a part of his own college search. When we arrived on campus, I decided to check in on Facebook. Along with the check-in I added a description: College tour with the sob who isn’t currently a student here. Um, yeah. I added a comment below: and of course i meant SON. Stupid auto-correct. #embarrassing This kind of thing has happened before. I know I should, as a good friend advised, adjust a setting so that whatever I type isn’t changed into something that provides tons of embarrassment and/or hysterics, but I can’t bring myself to do it. Does…

The Brady Bunch
My absolute favorite show when I was little was, hands down, “The Brady Bunch”. I don’t remember when I started watching it (the five seasons originally aired from 1969–when I was one year old–until 1974 and then syndication began immediately, making the shows available almost every day for years and years), but I watched it all the time. I watched “The Brady Kids” (the animated show), “The Brady Bunch Variety Hour” (singing and dancing in kooky outfits? yes please!), “The Brady Girls Get Married” (reunion tv movie!), “The Brady Brides” (so wacky!), “A Very Brady Christmas” (classic!), and even “The Bradys”, the hour-long drama that aired in 1990, depicting Marcia…

Birthday Traditions: Make A Cake And Eat It, Too.
A couple of weeks ago we celebrated J’s 17th birthday. SEVENTEEN. As in, “My younger–and last born–son is seventeen.” It would be really hard for me to believe if there weren’t a trail of rainbow-colored crumbs all over our family photo albums*. You see, around here birthdays mean one thing: beautifully decorated rainbow cakes (the insides are tinted in various colors). It’s a tradition my mom started, and what I love about it is the thought that goes into it, resulting in the birthday honoree feeling extra special. I remember how creative my mom was with birthday cakes when we were kids. Over the years, she made me a Holly…

Suburban Scrawl Drives A Chevy Suburban
NOW we’re talking, people. Now we’re talking. After all of the Chevrolet vehicles I have test-driven and reviewed in the past year (ahem, the Traverse, the Cruze, the Tahoe, the Volt, and the Sonic), I discovered that the one I drove over Thanksgiving weekend, the 2011 Chevy SUBURBAN, is the one I like the best. That’s saying a lot, too, because I really liked every single one of the other vehicles. But this one? Love. I even love the name: there’s something pretty spectacular about it…Suburban. Get it? Suburban? Suburban Scrawl? No worries. It was pointed out to me, too. Anyway, the lovely folks at Chevy were kind enough to…

Roxie’s Winter Ensemble, Now With Fewer Dog Boots.
Winter is here, folks, and it’s probably not news to you that my family lives in the Chicago area. That means pulling the heaters out of the crawlspace, putting extra blankets on the bed, and habitual wearing of fleece hoodies and sweatshirts. For Roxie, winter usually just means less outside walks with a good chance of a snowshoe outing now and then. (Oh, and an extra blanket on her bed, too.) I have never purchased a coat, sweater, or winter boots for her. I have always thought that dogs look ridiculous in clothing and since I don’t take Roxie out in dangerous temperatures, I figured there was really no need.…

Listen To Me: I Have An Announcement! (Then, Listen To Your Mother!)
I am beyond excited to FINALLY be able to talk about this online, after six days of knowing about it. Six days that seem like six years, that is! I, along with my friend Tracey of Just Another Mommy Blog, will be bringing the “Listen To Your Mother” show to Chicago in 2012! What IS the “Listen To Your Mother” show, you ask? It’s a showcase of local writers who read, for a live audience, one “performance” only, their words about motherhood. The first show, in Madison, Wisconsin on Mother’s Day in 2010 was conceived (get it?) and produced by Ann Imig, who is now the National Director. This year,…

Chicago’s Water Tower: Small But Mighty
This Saturday marks the 140th anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The fire, rumored–but never confirmed–to have been started by Mrs. O’Leary’s cow, not only razed just about the entire city but also set the stage for its rebirth into the world-class metropolis it is today. (If there ever was a silver lining to a disaster, that would be it.) The fire even jumped the Chicago River (more than once) on its way to burning an area four miles long by a half mile wide. It was one of the biggest disasters to occur in the United States in the 19th century. The Water Tower, at the north…

Breakfast On The Ledge! Yoga On The Ledge!
As most of you know, this summer I am a Skydeck Chicago Ambassador. It’s been really fun so far, being associated with the Willis (formerly Sears) Tower, one of the great buildings of the world! Although I’m not being financially compensated for this program, one of my benefits was the opportunity to enjoy “Breakfast on The Ledge”, and I took advantage of it on Monday. My companion for breakfast? My older son, D. Breakfast on The Ledge is a celebrity-style experience in which you eat a catered breakfast up on the 103rd floor of the Willis Tower before Skydeck Chicago is open to the public. We started getting excited when…

The Weekend We Smashed My Old Record To Bits
As you no doubt recall from the last two posts, my endless tweeting, and possibly my Facebook statuses, Momofali and her lovely, funny, and super-cute daughter visited me this weekend. I issued a challenge to you, to take a stab at guessing how many attractions I could show the two of them in the course of 2 1/2 days. I even made a little contest out of it, and decided to do a random drawing from all of the comments for a mini Chicago souvenir prize pack. But more about that at the end of this post. (See how I did that? Now you have to look at my vacation…
